Summary: | 907,428. Thermoselective devices. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Jan. 10, 1961 [March 2, 1960], No. 1043/61. Class 37. A thermo-electric assembly (for generating electricity, heating or cooling) comprises a plurality of thermo-electric elements with a flexible conductor secured to the body of each, thermally and electrically conductive straps interconnecting the elements, and compressible biasing means for extending the conductors. A thermo-electric generator comprises a thermal radiator 12 the inside of which is heated, e.g. by a burner (Fig. 1, not shown) and to the outside of which are secured thermoelectric elements 34. Elements 34 are alternately of P- and N-type semi-conductor material and at one end are interconnected by flexible copper straps 40 (Fig. 3) in a series, parallel or series-parallel ladder arrangement. Secured to the other end of each element is a flexible conductor (e.g. a braided copper cable) surrounded by a compression spring 44, and connected to a further set of copper straps 46. The ladder assembly is arranged with straps 40 in good thermal contact with radiator 12 and straps 46 in thermal contact with a second thermal radiator 14 having cooling fins 18. The springs are in compression and support radiator 12 centrally within radiator 14. The radiators may be of ceramic or metal, and if of metal are electrically insulated from straps 40, 46 by coating the radiators with alumina, glass or other ceramic material, silicone rubber, high-temperature paint, or thin strips of mica or mica paper. A layer of glass fibre lagging may be arranged between elements 34 to prevent heat transfer from radiator 12 to radiator 14. The elements may be encapsulated in glass, thin metal films or ceramics for protection. |
