Abstract A lubricating grease composition comprises a lubricating oil base gelled to a grease consistency with a mixture of a compound of the group consisting of indanthrene dyes, indogen dyes, phthalocyanines, N-acyl-9:10 dihydroxy-1:4 diaminoanthracenes; N-acyl-9:10-dihydroxy-1:2 diaminoanthracenes, N-acyldiaminoanthraquinones and N-acyldiaminoanthraquinones and N-acyl aminophenols, and 1,5 to 20% by weight, based on the total grease of one or more aliphatic diamines. Specified aliphatic diamines are 1:3 diamino-2-ethyl propane 1:4 diamino-2-poprylbutane, 1:5 diamino-3-methyl pentane, 1:5 diamino-3-butyl pentane, 1:6 diamino-4-ethylhexane, 1:2 diamino ethane, 1:3-diamino propane, 1:4 diamino butane, 1:5 diamino pentane, 1:6 diamino hexane, 1:7-diamino heptane, 1:8diamino octane, 1:9 diamino nonane, 1:10 diamino decane, 1:1 diamino ethane, 1:2 diamino propane, 1:3 diamino butane, 1:4 diamino pentane, 1:4 diamino hexane, 1:4 diamino heptane, 1:4 diamino octane, 2:6 diamino nonane, 3:6-diamino decane, 1:2 diamonocyclohexane, 1:4-diamino cyclohexane, 1:(aminomethyl)-2-aminocyclohexane, 1:4-(aminoethyl)cyclohexane 2:2-diamino-1-cyclohexyl propane. The amines may be incorporated by homogenizing them in a mixture of oil and other constituent, or incorporated in the other constituent before addition to the oil or may be dispersed in the oil before addition of the other constituent. Preferably the indanthrene compounds are utilized in the proportion of 5-35% based on the total weight of grease. The carbonyl groups of the indanthrene compounds may if desired be neutralized by metallic ions, e.g. sodium; potassium and calcium. Specified indogen dyes which may form constituents of grease compositions according to the invention are indigo, iso-indigo, 3-keto-indoline, isatide and isatin and specified phthalocyanines are zinc, nickel, aluminium and copper. If desired the phthalocyanines may be chlorinated. Other suitable constituent dyestuffs are those of formula <FORM:0901920/III/1> in which R = C12-22 or C3-16, these of formula <FORM:0901920/III/2> in which R = C14-22 and R1 and R11 are hydrogen atoms or C1-20. The lubricating oil may be a mineral or synthetic oil, the former from paraffinic or naphthenic sources, the latter including esters of mono-basic acids, halohydrocarbon oils, alkyl silicon compounds, diaryl dialkyl silanes, sulphite esters, carbonates, mercaptals and polyphenyl ethers.
