Abstract The present disclosure relates to a process and an apparatus for producing powder particles by atomization of a feed material in the form of an elongated member such as a wire, a rod or a filled tube. The feed material is introduced in and pre-heated by a pre-heating device which can be a plasma torch. A forward portion of the feed material is fed through a cooled elongated structure from the pre-heating device into an atomization nozzle of the plasma torch. A forward end of the feed material is surface melted by exposure to one or more plasma jets formed in the atomization nozzle. The one or more plasma jets can be an annular plasma jet, a plurality of converging plasma jets, or a combination of an annular plasma jet with a plurality of converging plasma jets. Powder particles obtained using the process and apparatus are also described. Il est décrit un procédé et un appareil de production de particules de poudre par atomisation dune substance de base sous la forme dun élément allongé tel quun fil, une tige ou un tube rempli. La substance de base est préchauffée par un dispositif de préchauffage, qui peut être une torche à plasma, et introduite dans celui-ci. Une partie avant de la substance de base est alimentée à travers une structure allongée refroidie à partir du dispositif de préchauffage dans une buse datomisation de la torche à plasma. Une extrémité avant de la substance de base est fondue en surface par exposition à au moins un ou plusieurs jets de plasma formés dans la buse datomisation.
