Abstract Disclosed are processes for producing deasphaited bitumen and heavy bitumen compositions from oil sands and processes for upgrading the bitumen compositions. The processes for producing the deasphaited bitumen and heavy bitumen compositions involve a Phase I and/or Phase II extraction solvent. According to the Phase I process, a high quality oil sands-derived, deasphaited bitumen can be produced using a Phase I type solvent. According to the Phase II process, a substantial amount of the heavy bitumen on the oil sand can be extracted using a Phase II type solvent, while producing a relatively a tailings by-product that is non-harmful to the environment. Tire heavy bitumen from tire Phase II type extraction process can be hydroprocessed for ready conversion into relatively high volumes of high quality transportation fuels. Linvention concerne des procédés qui permettent de produire des compositions de bitume désasphalté et de bitume lourd à partir de sables bitumineux, ainsi que des procédés qui permettent de valoriser des compositions de bitume. Les procédés permettant de produire des compositions de bitume désasphalté et de bitume lourd comprennent un solvant dextraction de phase I ou de phase II. Selon le procédé de la phase I, un bitume désasphalté de haute qualité, dérivé de sables bitumineux, peut être obtenu à laide dun solvant de type phase I. Selon le procédé de la phase II, une quantité importante du bitume lourd présent dans le sable bitumineux peut être extraite à laide dun solvant de type phase II, tout en produisant simultanément un sous-produit résiduel qui nest pas nocif pour lenvironnement. Le bitume lourd provenant du procédé dextraction de type de phase II peut être hydrotraité, pour une conversion facile en volumes relativement élevés de carburants de transport de haute qualité.
