Abstract Ferulate esterase producing bacterial strain Lactobacillus plantarum LP3710 or functional mutants thereof and methods of using ferulate esterase producing bacterial strain Lactobacillus plantarum LP3710 as forage additive is disclosed. Compositions comprising Lactobacillus plantarum LP3710 alone or in combination with other strains for use as a silage inoculant, and methods for treating pre- ensiled plant material with Lactobacillus plantarum LP3710 to enhance digestability of the silage are disclosed.
