Abstract A dual-rate surface effect damper(10) with extended useful life. The dual-ra te is pro- vided by two cylindrical liners (30, 32, 34, 36) which have different inner diameters which en- gage a damping piston (12) having protrusions (14) which have an interferenc e fit with the liner (30, 34). features which extended life include heat dissipative elemen ts such us internal and external fans (24); a convective MoS2, dispersed in a Teflon (B)filled flurosilicone. Maintaining the temperature of the elastomer (32, 34, 36) below about 200 .degree. F (93.3 .degree.C) is critical to avoiding thermal breakdown. In addition, the elastomer (32, 34, 36) and metal- lic surfaces (14) can undergo a surface treatment to reduce their tendency t o abrade and to cause abrasion, respectively.
