Copolymer comprising 5-95 mol.% of a cationic structural unit (A), 5-55 mol.% of a macromonomer structural unit (B), 0-80 mol.% of a structural unit (C) and 0-80 mol.% of another structural unit (D), is claimed, where the structural unit (A) is an ammonium structural unit of formula (CH 2=CH-CH 2-N +>(R 1>)(R 2>)-CH 2-CH=CH 2) (I) or (-CH 2-C(R 1>)(CO-Y 1>-V 1>-R 2>)-) (X ->) (II). R 1> : H or CH 3; R 2> : N +>R 3>R 4>R 5>; R 3>-R 5> : H, aliphatic 1-20C-hydrocarbon, a cycloaliphatic 5-8C-hydrocarbon, 6-14C-aryl or polyethylene glycol; Y 1> : O, NH or NR 3>; V 1> : -(CH 2) x-, benzen-1,4-yl and/or cyclohexan-1,4-yl; x : 1-6; and X : halo, 1-4C-alkyl sulfate and/or 1-4C-alkyl sulfonate. An independent claim is included for a formulation comprising the copolymer and maximum 10, preferably 4-6.5 wt.% of optionally a setting retarder for calcium sulfate-based building material systems comprising chelating agent, i.e. complex forming agents such as EDTA, diethylenetriamine pentaacetate, phosphates, phosphonates, sugar, tartaric acid, succinic acid, citric acid, gluconate, maleic acid, polyacrylic acid or its salts and/or retardants.
