Abstract | Procedure for preparing a material containing titanium trichloride, characterized in that it comprises the steps of (a) reacting titanium tetrachloride with a compound of formula AIRnX3-n in which R is a hydrocarbon group with 1 to 18 carbon atoms, X is a halogen atom and n is a number greater than 0 and less than or equal to 3, at a temperature on the order of -100ºC to + 20ºC, to obtain a solid, hydrocarbon-insoluble reaction product, (b) heating the reaction mixture at a temperature between 40 and 150ºC for a period of time from 1 minute to 50 hours, such being the choice of reaction conditions and the combination of heating time and temperature, within the prescribed limits, that the reaction product is transforms to a metastable red material, (c) treating the resulting solid product of (b) with a filling agent which is an ether, thioether or thiol of formula: R'-O-R'', R'-S-R'' or R'-S-H, where R'and R''which may be the same or different, are hydrocarbyl groups having 4 to 10 carbon atoms, and (d) adding to the product of (c) an aluminum alkyl dichloride or a tetravalent titanium halide such as reagent capable of generating a tetravalent titanium halide in situ.
