Summary:A process for production of a 2-azetidinone-1-oxoacetate of the formula useful as an intermediate for preparation of 2-SR -substituted-2-penem-3-carboxylate antibacterial agents; R is a conventional hydroxy protecting group, R is certain carboxy protecting groups and R is (C1-C6)alkyl, and m and n are each 0, 1 or 2; which comprises contacting a corresponding (2-oxo-1-azetidinyl)-N-2-hydroxyacetate ester of the formula with manganese dioxide in a reaction-inert organic solvent at 0-50 DEG C.
