Infertility caused by polycystic ovary syndrome in women of the municipality of Las Tunas

Background: polycystic ovary syndrome is the commonest cause of anovulatory infertility. In the statistical reports of the infertility consulting room of the municipality of Las Tunas high frequencies of infertility due to this cause are observed.Objective: to characterize the women with infertility caused by the polycystic ovary syndrome, treated at the infertility consulting room of the municipality of Las Tunas, from January 2017 to May 2018.Methods: a retrospective descriptive study was carried out with a sample of 60 women diagnosed with the polycystic ovary syndrome, who visited the aforementioned consulting room and during the period herein declared. The following clinicoepidemiological variables were studied: age, nutritional assessment according to body mass index, personal pathological history and clinical manifestations. The laboratory variables included: follicle-stimulating hormone, progesterone, testosterone, prolactin and luteinizing hormone.Results: 31 patients (53,3 %) belonged to the 30 to 34 age group, being the one mostly represented. There was a higher incidence of overweight patients (50 %). 56,67 % presented insulin resistance. Anovulation and oligomenorrhea, with 40 cases each (66,67 %) were the most frequent clinical signs. The hormones mostly affected were: progesterone, with low levels in 41 women (68,34 % of the cases) followed by testosterone with high levels in 40 women (66,67 %).Conclusions: the study characterized the clinicoepidemiological and laboratory variables related to the cases of anovulatory infertility caused by the polycystic ovary syndrome.
