Summary:This article describes the way in which, as an apprentice sociologist in training, I experienced the collective inquiry ending with the publication of La Misère du monde. After a description of my academic trajectory and my gradual entry into the Bourdieu house, I report, based on the archives, the initial project of this investigation and the methodological inflections to which it gives rise and leading in particular to the idea of the sociological interview as a spiritual exercise. Then I describe its implementation and conclude by talking about the division of labor within the hierarchical collective that surrounded Bourdieu. In order to contribute to the social history of the social sciences, I have tried to sociologize this testimony as much as possible by placing it in the social and historical context of the time.
