Photochemistry of some 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives: Part I

Irradiation of 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives 4a-d results in the formation of a cis-dimer 6 in the case of 44 and oxidation products 5a-d in the case of 4a-c. The effect of oxygen plays an important role in the type, rate or failure of oxidation. Ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) can also oxidize the d...

Summary:Irradiation of 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives 4a-d results in the formation of a cis-dimer 6 in the case of 44 and oxidation products 5a-d in the case of 4a-c. The effect of oxygen plays an important role in the type, rate or failure of oxidation. Ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) can also oxidize the dihydropyridines to pyridine derivatives on stirring at room temperature.
