Summary:The growing interest in visualization and interaction with large data has brought out the development of strategies that speed up data availability. Applications such as Virtual Microscopy are requiring efficacious, efficient and ubiquitous strategies to access very large images. Current navigation approaches use a JPEG pyramidal structure to stream and visualize very large images, a strategy that demands an important computational infrastructure and a complex management of the multiple files that compose the pyramid. This article introduces a novel JPEG2000-based service oriented architecture for streaming and visualizing very large images under scalable strategies. Results suggest that the proposed architecture facilitates transmission and visualization of large images, while it efficiently uses the available device resources.
