Summary:There is no doubt about, that the technical development in the steel industry influences the refractory world market. In the next 10 years the refractory consumption may decrease ironmaking refractories. In the hearth of blast furnaces carbon blocks are standard. Dense corundum bricks did not have sufficient alkali-resistance. Due to unsatisfactory experience with refractory lining in the mostly stressed parts of BF developments are made to dispense with refractory lining in general. For this reason stave cooling is being improved and the results found show very good chances for replacing insulating refractory lining by improved cooling. New developments are going on in lining of steel ladles. The trend for the next 10 years seems to move metallurgical work from the steel plant into the ladle. So instead of lining with fireclay sand one has to use basic linings or high alumina material.
