Abstract | Millennium Mambo (2001). Few contemporary filmmakers are as venerated by critics as the Chinese-born, Taiwan-based director Hou Hsiao-hsien. Hou's painstakingly composed films -- often set in the past, and assembled from lengthy, meditative shots that often double as complete scenes -- tend to be antithetical to Hollywood style. So despite the critical raves, few of his movies, which include "The Puppetmaster" (1993) and "Flowers of Shanghai" (1998), are exhibited outside of New York, L.A. and a few other major metropolitan areas, and are almost never seen on TV. But here's an exception. "Millennium Mambo" may not be among Hou's greatest films, perhaps, but it's clearly in a class of its own. |

AbstractList | T-Men (1947). Some of the toughest films noirs came out of the immediate postwar era, with World War II experiences infusing the genre with a greater grittiness, and no director in this regard can hold a candle to Anthony Mann. The influential "T-Men" follows Treasury agents Dennis O'- Keefe and Alfred Ryder in their infiltration of a counterfeiting ring, and although some of the film's usages have hardened into cliche -- among them the authoritarian voice-over narrator so typical of the era's crime dramas -- they are more than compensated for by insights such as the comparison of the crooks' sophisticated operations with the law's. The Tarnished Angels (1957). Douglas Sirk's sweeping adaptation of William Faulkner's "Pylon" is arguably the foremost film version of any Faulkner work -- the novelist himself thought so, anyway. Rock Hudson stars as a reporter drawn to the group surrounding a barnstorming pilot in the 1930s, to the point that his personal involvement puts his objectivity at risk. Despite the period romanticism, Sirk's clear-eyed direction crisply dissects the characters' interior lives. And with Irving Glassberg providing stunningly composed, widescreen, blackand-white cinematography, the director's celebrated mastery of lighting once again proves the crucial link in limning the anguished desperation of his knot of flawed but sympathetic characters, unable to either break free or to attain true happiness. With Robert Stack, Dorothy Malone and Jack Carson. The Queen of Sheba Meets the Atom Man (1963/1982). Shot and directed by Ron Rice, left uncompleted at his death, and later restored by its star, underground icon Taylor Mead, "The Queen of Sheba Meets the Atom Man" more than retains its spark as a radical rebuke to Hollywood and, to quote Alberto Moravia, "a protest against (the) industrialized world." And then there are the inspired performances by Mead and by Winifred Bryan as the queen. Living Theater founders Julian Beck and Judith Malina, and filmmaker Jack Smith, also appear. 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Albright College. Ulzana's Raid (1972). Usually butchered on TV, this violent Western metaphor for the Vietnam War by director Robert Aldrich stars Burt Lancaster as a grizzled Cavalry scout helping a greenhorn lieutenant (Bruce Davison) locate a savage Apache who has escaped from the reservation, turning the Southwestern frontier into a bloodbath. In addition to the Vietnam conflict, the film's atmosphere of never-ending uncertainty in a land where the gap between Christian and Indian cultures cannot be bridged bears some relevance to contemporary entanglements. Lancaster's has one of his strongest late-career roles, on a par with "Atlantic City" and "Local Hero," and Richard Jaeckel as a resourceful sergeant and Jorge Luke as an Apache scout bring understated excellence to their roles. Cinematography by Joseph Biroc. 3:45 p.m. and 11:50 p.m. Friday on Encore Westerns. Three Ranown Westerns. The series of Westerns directed by Budd Boetticher, produced by Harry Joe Brown and starring Randolph Scott, known as the Ranown cycle, have become cult favorites for their intelligent writing, crisp action and vivid character roles. The Encore Westerns channel airs three on Saturday. "Decision at Sundown" (1957; 2:50 p.m.) is a not-so-straightforward revenge saga. In "The Tall T" (1957; 4:10 p.m.), based on an Elmore Leonard story and scripted by Burt Kennedy, Scott is part of a group taken hostage by a band of outlaws. "Ride Lonesome" (1959; 5:30 p.m.), also written by Kennedy, follows Scott's perilous journey in taking in an outlaw. The supporting cast includes James Coburn and Lee Van Cleef. Out of Sight (1998). A bunch of very good movies have been extracted from Elmore Leonard's prose -- more than a few bad ones, too. But Steven Soderbergh's adaptation of Leonard's 1996 novel about the unlikely romance between a bank robber (George Clooney) and a sexy U.S. Marshall (Jennifer Lopez) is at the top of the short list of the best. Scripted by Scott Frank (who also adapted Leonard's "Get Shorty") and utilizing a prismatic story structure -- not for flashiness, but to get deeper into the characters -- the movie fully deserved its "surprise" National Society of Film Critics best-picture win in a year of overblown, self-aggrandizing entries such as "Saving Private Ryan" and "Shakespeare in Love." A special award honoring its cast -- including Ving Rhames, Steve Zahn, Catherine Keener, Albert Brooks, Dennis Farina, Luis Guzman, Viola Davis, the uncredited Samuel L. A Kiss Before Dying (1956). The fact that it was subject to an inferior remake shouldn't prejudice fans of the genre from checking out this relatively unheralded but very effective film noir. One of many pictures (including Woody Allen's "Match Point") to echo the central action of Theodore Dreiser's "An American Tragedy," Gerd Oswald's "A Kiss Before Dying" stars Robert Wagner -- whose callowness has never been used to better effect -- as an upwardly mobile cad who bumps off his pregnant girlfriend. However, in this case, that's just the beginning. At first, Oswald is content to let the shocks transpire in broad daylight; the film starts accumulating the shadows of noir as the script -- based on the novel by Ira Levin ("Rosemary's Baby") -- delves into the real subject matter: parentchild relationships and their psychological toll. Midnight Saturday on TCM. Flirting With Disaster (1996). Ben Stiller's reign as king of the comedy of abject humiliation in such smashes as "There's Something About Mary" and the "Fockers" movies started with his role as a failure searching for his birth parents in this early comedy by David O. Russell ("Three Kings," "I Heart Huckabees"). Nearly stealing the show from Stiller is Tea Leoni as the inept case worker helping him in his careful-what-you-wish-for, screwup-fraught quest. Unable to realize the "Dick Van Dyke Show" reunion he'd hoped for, Russell settled for teaming Mary Tyler Moore with George Segal as Stiller's adoptive parents. Alan Alda and Lily Tomlin pass the acid test as his real parents, and Josh Brolin and Richard Jenkins are terrific as a pair of gay FBI agents. Patricia Arquette co-stars. 5 p.m. Thursday on Starz Cinema . Millennium Mambo (2001). Sin City (2005). There's no question that Robert Rodriguez's films have style to burn. His problem has always been to come up with a halfwayinvolving narrative framework on which to hang his eye- grabbing compositions. So while Rodriguez's latest maintains the director's jack-of-all-trades credit roll -- he cut and shot the film, wrote some of the music, supervised the visual effects, etc. etc.-- graphic novelist/ screenwriter Frank Miller earned the co- director slot that the Directors Guild refused to recognize (leading to Rodriguez's resignation) and maybe even his namecheck in the full title ("Frank Miller's Sin City") by providing Rodriguez with a real story. My Neighbor Totoro (1988). Turner Classic Movies' tribute to Japan's master animator Hiyao Miyazaki continues with one of his breakthrough works, the bewitching story of a pair of sisters and their magical companion. Far from the action-oriented anime of his earlier (and some of his later) work, "Totoro" is a showcase for Miyazaki's virtues: his facility for depicting nature in all its brilliance and for unaffected juvenile characters, a Maurice Sendak- like genius eye for imaginary creatures (including not only the towering Totoro but also a gigantic cat that doubles as a bus) and the insistence on the family as the root of the drama, imposing a solid narrative grounding to his captivating flights of fancy. The film was released in the United States only in a dubbed version, which will air at 8 p.m. Thursday, with the long-awaited subtitled, Japanese-language version following at 1:15 a.m. Friday. Lubitsch. If the wit and sophistication synonymous with the great director Ernst Lubitsch are virtually extinct in Hollywood today, thank goodness for the continued availability of at least some of his films on television and in other formats. Celebrating the anniversary of his 113th birthday on Saturday, Turner Classic Movies presents the droll "The Merry Widow" (1934; 8 p.m.) and the disappointing "That Uncertain Feeling" (1941; 10 p.m.) before launching into high gear with a trio of late Lubitsch masterworks: "The Shop Around the Corner" (1940; 11:30 p.m.), with James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan as uncongenial workers at a Budapest department store who are conducting an anonymous romance by love letter; "Ninotchka" (1939; 1:15 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 29), starring Greta Garbo as a dour Russian Communist seduced by Paris; and "To Be or Not To Be" (1942; 3:15 a.m. Hatari! (1962). Although it's worn thin in spots over the years, Howard Hawks' adventure comedy about an international group of big- game trappers in Tanganyika remains one of the most interesting and entertaining of Hawks' films about groups of people joined in a common job of work. Unthinkable amid the political conflicts in today's Africa, "Hatari" has an element of exploitation as John Wayne and his mostly white crew capture animals for the world's zoos. But the post-World War II subtext of former enemies -- American, German, French, Italian, Spanish -- working in harmony toward a common goal powerfully suggests that individual personalities matter more than national identities. With Elsa Martinelli, Red Buttons, Gerard Blain, Hardy Kruger. Script by Leigh Brackett ("The Empire Strikes Back"); music score by Henry Mancini. 6 p.m. Saturday on TCM. Gregory LaCava. Native Pennsylvanian Gregory LaCava started out as a cartoonist, was summoned to Hollywood to work as an animator and then, like Frank Tashlin and Andrew Adamson after him, turned to live-action filmmaking, soon making his name as one of 1930s Hollywood's foremost comedy directors. On Friday, Turner Classic Movies pays tribute to LaCava with eight films, seven from the '30s, probably the most indispensable of which is "My Man Godfrey" (1936; 6:15 p.m.), a screwball comedy with a social conscience. William Powell stars as a casualty of the Depression who becomes a flighty socialite's (Carole Lombard) butler. The comedy of contrasts, the subtextural seriousness and the brilliant performances all are evidence of LaCava's finesse. |
