Abstract | There is much to dig into with those numbers, including the role of global climate change, the extreme weather patterns that funneled warmth into the U.S. while freezing some other parts of the world in 2012, and locally what continues to appear to be an exaggerated "urban heat island" effect on low temperatures at the Roanoke Regional Airportsite. |

AbstractList | Processes known as dynamic cooling, the lowering of the freezing level related to barometric pressure changes, and cold air advection, the physical movement of cold air by wind, will be at work. Whereas the 2011-12 winter stayed consistently mild for most of its three months, with some very quick shots of cold air, the 2012-13 winter has alternated periods of very warm air with longer cold periods than we saw last winter, though not extremely cold. Here is my list of top five weather events of 2012 affecting the Roanoke Times readership area -- the Roanoke and New River valleys and adjacent areas. 1. Stephen Keighton, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Blacksburg who spearheads local weather research, said that the Bedford County "snow hole" on Thursday will be a subject of some further analysis. [...]spring is around the corner, and winter may not have many more punches left in it. The coming intrusion of Arctic air may well be a manifestation of events observed in the latter half of 2012, including the rapid snowpack growth across Siberia in October and the record low summer ice coverage in the Arctic Ocean. There is much to dig into with those numbers, including the role of global climate change, the extreme weather patterns that funneled warmth into the U.S. while freezing some other parts of the world in 2012, and locally what continues to appear to be an exaggerated "urban heat island" effect on low temperatures at the Roanoke Regional Airportsite. There may be some mountain snow showers Friday and Saturday on the back side of what will become a powerful winter storm off the coast of New England, but no widespread snow or ice situations are expected in our region at least through the middle of next week. In that case, winter storm warnings were posted for expectations of 4 or more inches of snow, but precipitation changed to sleet faster than initially expected. [...]all three could play minor roles, and if it comes down to small pockets of above-freezing temperatures between cloud and ground, it is possible that it will cool enough for sleet or snow to reach the surface in some areas. [...]Roanoke was perfectly placed Thursday night with just the right depth of cold air and the right amount of moisture so that it neither stayed too warm nor dried up too much. For the most part, forecasts were accurate in projecting a broad area of light snow south and east of our region from central Virginia into the Carolinas, and a second area of streaky light snow to the north and west from typical upslope wind effects in the mountains. |
