Abstract It is the purpose of this chapter to provide most of the information associated with the dynamic behavior of slender cables (mooring lines), with particular emphasis on marine applications. The basics of its content are based on the personal fundamental research of the authors as regards the applications of cables in the marine environment, giving special consideration to the details of their time varying response.cable dynamicslender structuremarineapplication The dynamics of cables have been investigated for decades, but admittedly, the specific subject attracted profound attention by the global research community with respect to the use of cables in offshore deep water applications. The interested reader can find an enormous amount of very important and thorough studies in the literature, which address relevant problems, from statics to very complicated nonlinear dynamics, using various mathematical formulations, and from simple to sophisticated numerical solution schemes. The scope of the present effort is to associate the aspect of dynamics, linear and nonlinear, with the most typical practical applications of cables in the marine environment and especially in the offshore sector. The methodology that was chosen to perform this task relies on a global formulation for the governing dynamical systems. A generic analysis that is based on the assumption of line dynamics exploiting the fact that relevant representations may be effectively considered as two-point boundary value problems.
