Submerged blown oxygen serves in several applications as refining gas and carrier gas for solid materials such as powdered lime. Moreover, this technology can also be used for refining of ferro alloys, such as FeMn and FeCr, and for hot metal pre-treatment, such as dephosphorisation.
The K-OBM converter provides an extremely flexible variant of converter steelmaking in which oxygen is blown both through a top lance as in conventional LD steelmaking, but also through submerged tuyeres. Operation of the process can be modified to exactly fit a desired product mix, eg carbon and stainless steel. This flexibility is a unique feature compared with all other available steelmaking technologies, including the LD converter and EAF. The technology, which is used in Japanese plants in particular, is marketed by VAI and KCT, a 100% subsidiary of VAI, and by respective engineering licensees. Moreover, the technology can also be used for the refining of ferro alloys, such as FeMn and FeCr, and for hot metal pre-treatment, such as dephosphorization.
