Abstract In order to seek for new compounds with antitumor activity, great attention has been paid to the coordination-based metal-organic complexes. This work presents the synthesis and characterization of a new In(III)-based coordination polymer [In(hip)(MeOH)](DMF)2 (1, DMF = N,N-Dimethylformamide) has been successfully prepared by a solvothermal reaction of In(NO3)3·6H2O and 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid (H3hip) in a mixed solvent of DMF and MeOH with the presence of NaCl as template. The complex 1 was characterized by elemental analysis (EA), single-crystal X-ray crystallography and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and the results reveal that complex 1 shows a three-dimensional channel-type network with considerable solvent accessible volume that generated from the linking of the binuclear In(III) clusters. Furthermore, complex 1 could be downsized into nanoscale particles with the aid of PVP (polyvinyl pyrrolidone). In addition, the anticancer activity of 1 and the nanoscale 1 have been probed via the MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay against two human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells CNE1 and HONE1.
