AbstractList The Foods Standards Agency (FSA) has drawn up stricter rules to tackle consumer understanding of food provenance on labelling. The FSA feels terms such as "Produce of...", "British", "Origin" imply that the processing and origin of ingredients are the same. New FSA guidelines state that companies may not use the phrase "produced in the UK" if the main ingredient has been imported.

A Dutch tomato grower has worked with packaging firm Vers Direct Nederland (VDN) to create a blister pack for tomato sales. JM van Eden Petersmen & Zonen, of Moerkapelle, Holland, aims to generate sales by appealing to consumers with "on-the-go" lifestyles. The new hard-plastic packaging, which is able to hold seven tomatoes, offers durability while travelling. With the inclusion of a card insert, VDN is able to offer the design to other companies with room for corporate branding.
The latest issues relevant to Brasslca growers will be discussed at an event for HDC members on 14 February. Hosted by Elsoms seeds in Spalding, speakers will include Elsoms head of vegetable breeding Sue Kennedy, who will discuss breeding brassicas for the UK and subjects including seed production for the demanding grower and pest and disease control in 2007.
Idaho is experiencing a dramatic rise in potato growers planting mustard seed around potatoes as an alternative to pesticides, according to the US Department of Agriculture. Mustard seeds' glucosinolate is said to mimic pesticides used in potato crops, also creating better yields and uniformity. Native American land was tested after the light sandy soil saw pesticides contaminating tribes' drinking water in wells. Growers claim it saves them £280 per acre (0.40ha) in pesticides.
A compound found in strawberries has been found to destroy cancer, according to research. Salvestrols, also found in cranberries, kill tumours by targeting an enzyme found in cancer cells. The Leicester School of Pharmacy showed that cancer cells containing a protein called CYP 1 B 1 were wiped out by the salvestrol Q40 compound found in tangerine peel.
