Abstract The share of EAF-based steel production has increased to 33% worldwide. This is the result of its low specific investment cost and the application of new technologies which allow production of good quality flat steel products by minimills. Hot metal means major cost savings, increased productivity, high steel quality and independence from scrap price developments. Apart from the blast furnace route, Corex is the only industrially proven process capable of economic production of hot metal for minimills. The Corex Plant C-1000, with a hot metal capacity of approximately 300-400kt/y, is the ideal unit for supplying virgin iron to minimills with an annual steelmaking capacity of 600-l200kt/y. Numerous forecasts predict that total EAF steelmaking capacity will increase by approximately 120Mt during the next ten years. A significant portion of this added capacity will be for the production of high quality steels.

However, this also means increased demand for high quality scrap, the availability of which is decreasing due to improved yields in steelmaking processes. The use of hot metal in minimills offers the possibility to produce steel at lower costs than in traditional scrap-based mills. Apart from the blast furnace route, Corex is the only industrially proven process capable of economic production of hot metal for minimills. The Corex Plant C-1000, with a hot metal capacity of approximately 300-400kt/y, is the ideal unit for supplying virgin iron or low residual scrap to minimills with an annual steelmaking capacity of 60-1200kt/y. Depending on the raw material mix, a C-1000 (nominal output 1000t/d) produces 40 to 50t of hot metal per hour.
