Abstract The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) has been specified by the EPA to identify wastes that are hazardous and, therefore, subject to regulation. The method is based on a leaching procedure to identify the amount and type of toxic metals that can be leached from the material. Three commercial decorated glass bottles were investigated with the purpose of producing a recommended analytical procedure in accordance with the specified TCLP methodology to improve the applicability of the method. Details are given of sampling and analysis procedures, the TCLP extraction method, materials and sample size, grinding methodologies for sample size reduction (hammering, cutting and crushing), homogenisation, sample splitting, the statistical approach to sampling, extraction procedure, and effect of particle size. The results are presented and interpreted. A protocol is recommended. 5 refs.
