Abstract Tricalcium phosphate (TCP) is a potential bioceramic material for use as implants. An attempt was made to obtain hot-pressed beta-TCP specimens that have improved properties compared with those obtained by pressureless sintering. TCP powder compacts with MnO2 additions were hot-pressed at 1070 C for 1 h under Ar. Prepared samples were analysed by XRF, XRD, and dilatometry, and their porosity, relative density, flexural strength and microhardness were determined. Microstructures were analysed. MnO2 addition to TCP did not improve the flexural strength of hot-pressed specimens; however, hot-pressed specimens had superior mechanical properties compared with pressureless sintered specimens. 15 refs.
