Abstract Between 2008 and 2015, 28 of my Aboriginal friends in Central Australia died. They were my friends, and not patients. Only one of them died of 'old age', even though I am sure he was far younger than the 80 or so years that an average Australian male would be expected to live. All the others died much younger; two were only in their 30s, at least three were only in their 40s, and several were in their 50s. Only one died of what I call a 'bad luck disease', which was a leukaemia, an apparently non-preventable disease, whereas all the others died prematurely due to complications of conditions that theoretically can be prevented, such as chronic kidney disease. Two of them died in car accidents involving alcohol.
AbstractList First of all, we must recognise that the diseases from which large numbers of Lutherans are dying prematurely are quite preventable, and the prevention is not actually very complicated nor expensive.[...]for the Lutheran church in the twenty-first century to promote health in Central Australia has a strong historical precedent, and I am not suggesting anything ground-breaking.Being healthy does not simply mean physical health, but it must include a much broader view of health.10 This broad definition of health is closely related to the biblical concept of shalom, which includes not only peace but also wholeness, well-being and harmony in the manifold relationships of daily life, manifested in bodily health, security, happiness, a long life ending in a natural death, prosperity and abundance.11 Therefore a serious conversation about health is not limited to the topics of injury, disease and death, but should also be undergirded by a study on the biblical concept of shalom, and hence encompasses issues such as vocation, freedoms and responsibilities in society and so on.12 Such a conversation would most likely include important issues such as education, employment and incarceration, which are aspects of broader personal and community health where Aboriginal Lutherans in Central Australia are clearly very unhealthy by objective measures.13 Furthermore, I believe that the Lutheran church is strategically placed to promote health because it has a very long and respected history in Central Australia.Because alcohol is a major cause of illness, antisocial behaviour, domestic violence and premature death amongst Central Australian Lutherans, alcohol (other than in Holy Communion) should not be served at public church functions;17 this, I believe, has already been implemented by Lutheran organisations in Central Australia.
Between 2008 and 2015, 28 of my Aboriginal friends in Central Australia died. They were my friends, and not patients. Only one of them died of 'old age', even though I am sure he was far younger than the 80 or so years that an average Australian male would be expected to live.
