근대기 ‘한국철학’의 형성과 리학(理學)의 철학적 전환 - 박은식과 정인보를 중심으로

본고는 역사적 근대기에 있어 ‘한국철학’의 형성 과정에 대해 동아시아 근대철학의 맥락에서 살펴보되, 박은식과 정인보의 철학적 입장이라고 할 리학(理學)의 철학적 전환이라는 관점에 주된 초점을 맞춰 조명해보았다. 근대기 ‘한국철학’은 일본철학과 중국철학의 형성에 자극을 받아 형성되기 시작했다. 일본의 메이지 계몽주의자들은 지적 민족주의의 촉발에 의해 철학을 주체적으로 사유했으나, 이후 이노우에 데쓰지로에 의해 일본철학은 제국주의와 국민도덕을 강화하기 위한 수단으로 전락하였다. 반면, 량치차오는 지적 민족주의와 국가주의를 적절히 배합하여 오늘날 중국철학의 번영을 이끄는 기초를 닦았다. 박은식은 근대기 일본과 중국의 철학으로부터 많은 영향을 받았으나, 그들과 다른 양태로 ‘한국철학’을 구상하였다. 조선의 리학(理學) 전통은 세계에 알릴만한 가치가 내재하므로, 리학이 본령(本領)학문의 성격을 회복하여 철학의 길로 나아가게 하기 위해 양명학을 방법론적으로 도입하고자 하였다. 그러나 박은식은 말년에 주체로서의 ‘진아’에 도덕주체 뿐만 아니라 인식주체로서의 성격을 부여함으로써 조선 리학적 특성을 반영하였다. 정인보는 이러한 박은식의 철학적 구상과 비젼, 방법으로서의 양명학관을 기본적으로 계승하였으나, 실학(實學)과의 관계 정립을 통해 리학의 철학적 전환을 꾀하였다. 정인보는 독자성을 지닌 조선학을 통해 실제성을 추구하는 분과학으로서의 실학으로 나아가고, 다시 실학으로부터 리학을 추구해야 한다고 생각했다. 그러나 민족과 인민에 대한 측은함을 촉발시키도록 하는 민족주의적 동력은 다름 아닌 리학에 근본한다고 보았다. 따라서 리학은 모든 학문의 근본이자 전제가 되는 학문이다. Modern Korean philosophy was profoundly influenced by the formation of Japanese and Chinese philosophies within East Asia. In Japan, the Meiji Enlightenment, propelled by intellectual nationalism, initially embraced philosophy with subjectivity. However, under the guidance of Inoue Tetsujiro, Japanese philosophy was subsequently instrumentalized to bolster imperialism and national morality. In contrast, Liang Qiqiao played a pivotal role in the flourishing of contemporary Chinese philosophy by merging intellectual and popular nationalism. Park Eun-sik, though significantly impacted by Japanese and Chinese modern philosophies, envisioned Korean philosophy in a distinct manner. He posited that the Korean lihak (Neo-Confucianism) tradition deserved global recognition and sought to reinvigorate it by introducing Yangming learning as a methodological framework. His aim was to restore lihak to its foundational learning status and to steer it toward a philosophical trajectory. In his later years, Park Eun-sik shifted towards a philosophy strongly infused with Korean characteristics, where the concept of jin-ah (true self) was characterized not only as a moral subject but also as a cognitive agent, thus presenting a Korean philosophy reflective of the Joseon lihak tradition. Jeong In-bo largely inherited Park Eun-sik’s philosophical vision and Yangming learning methodology but transitioned lihak into the domain of philosophy through its engagement with 'silhak' (practical learning). Jeong In-bo argued for advancing 'silhak' as a science grounded in the unique aspects of Joseon learning, and from this standpoint, pursuing philosophical lihak. He maintained that the nationalistic impetus, which fosters compassion for the nation and its people, is deeply rooted in lihak, asserting that lihak remains the essential and foundational basis for all disciplines.
