Abstract | The present study examines the relationship between adverbs of degree and their co-occurring adjectives, which is referred to as amplifier collocations (e.g., fully fledged). This study particularly investigates the types and functions of amplifier collocations in American English by conducting a corpus study, using the Corpus of Contemporary American English. The data obtained from the corpus study are compared to the findings of amplifier collocations in British English reported in Kennedy (2003) in order to examine whether, to what extent, and how American English differ from British English in amplifier collocations. Results show that, despite some similarities, there are notable differences between the two varieties of English in amplifier collocations from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives, which can contribute to English education with pedagogical implications.
