노년층 유머 텍스트 이해 능력과 인지 기능의 관련성 연구

목적: 본 연구에서는 정상 노년층과 청년층 사이에 유머를 이해하는 능력의 차이가 있는가를 알아보았다. 유머의 유형, 오답의 유형에 따른 반응을 통해 연령 집단 간의 차이를 살피고 관련 인지기능 요인을 탐구함으로써 노년층의 유머이해능력을 예측하는 변인에 대해 탐구하였다. 방법: 본 연구는 만 19세에서 만 29세의 정상 청년층 16명과 만 60세 이상의 정상 노년층을 대상으로 하였다. 대상자들에게 총 20문항의 과제를 제시하고(어휘 유형 10문항, 화용 유형 10문항) 유머의 적절한 마무리를 고르도록 하였다. 유머의 맥락상으로 적절하면서 우스운 답안(funny correct ending: FC)을 고르는 것이 정반응 처리되었으며 오반응 유형으로는 말이 되는 오답(straightforward ending: SF), 단순한 익살 오답(humorous non-sequitur ending: HNS), 무관한 오답(unrelated non-sequitur ending: UNS)이 있었다. 노년층 내에서 유머이해점수를 예측하는 변인을 살피기 위해 인지기능과 관련한 검사(K-CWST, COWAT, SVLT)를 실시하였다. 결과: 노년층의 유머이해점수가 청년층에 비해 유의하게 낮았다. 또한 어휘 유형에서 보다 화용 유형의 과제에서 수행차가 유의하게 컸다. 청년층은 HNS 유형의 오답을, 노년층은 SF 유형의 오답을 가장 높은 비율로 선택하였다. 노년층의 유머이해 과제 수행은 구어적 기억력과 유의한 상관을 보였다. 결론: 노년층이 청년층에 비해 유머 텍스트를 이해하는 데 더 어려움을 보였으며, 오답지를 선택하는 반응률에 있어 연령차가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 유머이해능력의 차이는 노년층의 구어적 기억력과 관련이 있는 것으로 사료된다. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate whether differences existed between young and elderly adults in their ability to understand humor. Age-related differences were examined according to humor type, error pattern, and related cognitive factors. Methods: Participants in the study included 16 adults aged from 19 to 29 years old and 17 adults over the age of 60. A humor comprehension task was developed for this study which consisted of 20 items (10 semantic-based humor, 10 pragmatic-based humor). Participants were required to choose the punch line of the joke among a choice of 4 options (FC: funny correct ending; SF: straightforward ending; HNS: humorous non-sequitur ending; and UNS: unrelated non-sequitur ending). Cognitive tests (K-CWST, COWAT, SVLT) were administered to examine cognitive factors related to humor comprehension in elderly adults. Results: The humor comprehension accuracy of elderly adults was significantly lower compared to young adults. There was also a significant difference between groups according to the type of humor, with lower scores for pragmatic-based humor compared to semantic-based humor. Young and elderly adults demonstrated a significant difference in error pattern with HNS as the most frequently chosen error type for young adults and SF as the most frequently chosen error type for elderly adults. Humor comprehension accuracy for elderly adults was correlated with age and verbal memory scores. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that elderly adults have more difficulty in understanding humor texts compared to young adults and that there are age-related differences in error patterns. Additionally, humor comprehension of elderly adults was associated with verbal memory. KCI Citation Count: 0
