Summary:This study investigates the effects of English medium instruction (EMI) at a college level on students' acquisition of the content knowledge and their English ability. It also compares students' level of interest in and satisfaction with an EMI course and the same course taught in Korean. One of the researchers of the present study taught two classes of the same subject, Introduction to Applied English Linguistics, one in English and the other in Korean. Students' acquisition of content knowledge was measured through two in-class exams (midterm and final), and their improvement of English ability through the comparison between the two English proficiency tests executed at the beginning and the end of the semester. The students' level of interest and satisfaction were also measured through the official course evaluation. The results show that there is no significant difference in students' acquisition of content knowledge and their English ability between the EMI course takers and the Korean course takers. The results also demonstrate that the EMI course takers showed as high satisfaction and interest as the Korean course takers, which shows that students' satisfaction and interest may not be much related to the medium of instruction.
