카자흐스탄 영화 〈스탈린에게 바치는 선물〉에 내재된 집단 기억과 민족 정체성

루스템 압드라쉐프 Rustem Abdrashev의 <스탈린에게 바치는 선물 The Gift to Stalin>(2008)은 1949년 카자흐스탄을 배경으로 한 작품이다. 이 영화는 구소련 정부에 의해 수많은 소수민족들을 중앙아시아로 강제 이주했던 사건과 스탈린의 핵실험이라는 소연방 제국주의의 상흔을 영상화하고 있다. 하지만 이 작품이 관객에게 던지는 감동은 스탈린 시기의 강제 이주와 핵폭탄 실험이라는 민감한 정치 문제를 다루면서도 냉혹한 역사 고발에 함몰되지 않기 때문이다. 영화는 유태인 소년인 사샤와 그를 손자처럼 돌보아주는 카심의 관계를 중심으로 냉전과 폭압적 정권의 암울한 시기에도 변하지 않는 인종과 종교, 연령을 초월한 사랑과 믿음을 표현한다. 영화는 핵폭발 직전 카자흐스탄을 떠났던 어린 소년이 거의 60년이 지나 카자흐스탄으로 돌아와서 술회하는 회상의 형식을 취하고 있다. ‘체험하는 나 experiencing I’와 ‘서술하는 나 narrating I’ 사이의 의식적 성장이 영화의 서사 구조를 형성한다. 중년의 사샤의 역은 실제 이 시나리오의 주인공이기도 한 이스라엘 작가 다비드 마르키슈 Давид Маркиш가 연기했으며 그의 회상이 시나리오 작가 파벨 핀 Павел Финн의 영화 플롯으로 재현되었다. 이렇게 영화는 소비에트 체제 하에서 견뎌내야 했던 카자흐스탄의 비극적인 역사를 다루면서도 인간의 진정한 휴머니즘적 가치에 무게중심을 두고 있다. 본고에서는 소비에트 제국 하에서 자신들만의 민족 정체성을 구축하며 ‘공존’과 ‘상생’의 가치를 추구했던 카자흐스탄의 국가 이념을 영화 미학적 차원에서 규명하였다. 이는 카자흐스탄이 카자흐족을 중심에 두면서도 여러 다민족의 혼재성과 공존을 지향하는 정책을 추구하기 때문이다. 특히 다비드 마르키슈의 어린 시절을 재현하는 사샤는 다문화를 체험하고 이를 폭넓게 수용하는 전형으로 등장한다. 영화에 나타난 카자흐스탄 마을 공동체의 다문화성 역시 오늘날 카자흐스탄의 정체성 확립과 다민족 국가를 표방하는 정신에 잘 반영되어 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 영화의 제작 배경이 되는 소비에트 체제하의 강제 이주와 주변국들의 집단 기억에 대한 반추, 카자흐스탄 이주민들의 저항 정신과 정체성 확립, 다민족 공동체 정신과 종교적 영성의 공존 표출 등을 다양한 카메라 촬영 기법과 상징적인 이미지 분석을 통해 고찰하였다. 이 영화는 역사적 재현을 통해 현 세대가 그 역사의 현장을 기억하도록 하지만 그것을 단순히 아픔으로 받아들이는 것이 아니라 그 상처를 응시하고 트라우마를 극복하는 내적인 힘을 발견하도록 한다. 감독은 영화로 재현한 이런 공동의 기억이 다음 세대에 공통의 유산으로 대물림되어 사회의 ‘시간적 통합’을 강화할 수 있을 것이며, 이것이 카자흐스탄의 미래를 여는 강력한 힘이 될 것임을 믿었던 것이다. <The Gift to Stalin> by Rustem Abdrashev is a film dealt with the wounds of Soviet imperialism in the Kazakhstan of 1949, when the Soviet administration forced the minorities to move to the Central Asia. It is also the year of the Soviet nuclear bomb test in Kazakhstan. The movie combines the two historical cases. The merit of the film is in the fact that it does not suffer a nervous collapse under the weight of a grim reality, despite its handling of sensitive political issues, e.g. the forced migration and the nuclear bomb test by Stalin. Rather, this film focuses the relationship between a Jewish boy Sasha and an old man Kasim, who takes care of the boy like a blood relative. Their relationship becomes a symbol of never-changing love and faith transcending race, religion, and age even during the darkest era under the tyrannical regime. The boy who had left home just before the bomb test has returned to Kazakhstan after more than 50 years narrates the story based on the humanistic aspects of man’s value. This study investigates the national ideology of Kazakhstan, establishing the national identity while seeking the value of mutual coexistence, in terms of film aesthetics because Kazakhstan is a country of multi-ethnic communities. The boy Sasha, who represents the childhood of Israeli writer David Markish, appears to be a model figure of experiencing and accepting the multi-culture in the nation. Analyzing the movie, it is worth noting the fact that the growth of consciousness between ‘the experiencing I’ and ‘the narrating I’ is naturally dissolved as means of maintaining a warm gaze while reciting the dismal story of the dark period. In these categories, the following contents are investigated by a variety of shooting techniques and image analysis: the ruminations on the collective memory, the spirit of resistance of Kazakhstan migrants and the establishment of national identity, the multiracial partnership and religious coexistence in Kazakhstan.
