Summary: | Objectives : Hydrolyzed Hibiscus sabdariffa L. extract (VC-H1) is rich in free amino acids, antioxidants, and phenolic compounds, which collectively suggest its potential benefits for skin health, particularly through the stimulation of collagen synthesis. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of VC-H1 on UVB-induced photoaging using SKH-1 hairless mice as an in vivo model.
Methods : UVB irradiation was initiated at 50 mJ/cm 2 and increased weekly by 50 mJ/cm 2 , reaching 200 mJ/cm 2 from the fourth to the eighth week. The normal and UVB control groups received a standard basal diet (AIN-93G). Treatment groups were fed AIN-93G supplemented with 0.2% or 1.0% VC-H1 for eight weeks. A 1.0% fish collagensupplemented diet was used as a positive control.
Results : VC-H1 significantly reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL), wrinkle depth, skin roughness, epidermal thickness, and the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP1 and MMP3). Furthermore, VC-H1 markedly enhanced the expression of genes associated with skin hydration and collagen production, including HAS1, HAS2, fgfr1, and COL1A1, and increased dermal collagen fiber content.
Conclusions : These results indicate that VC-H1 exerts protective effects against UVB-induced photoaging by promoting hyaluronic acid and collagen synthesis. VC-H1 may serve as a potential natural ingredient for skin health and anti-aging applications. 1) |
