인도와 한국 불상의 안면 특징 비교연구

불상은 붓다를 형상화한 조각상이다. 우리는 인물을 형상화한 조각상에서 가장 먼저 얼굴을 인지하게 된다. 불교는 무교를 제외하고 전 세계적으로 4번째로 신자 수가 많은 종교다. 불교의 상징 매체인 불상도 세계 각지에서 제작되었다. 그렇다면 전 세계의 모든 불상들의 얼굴은 다 같을까. 그렇지 않다. 불상은 시대별, 지역별로 다양한 특징을 가지고 있다. 인도 사람인 붓다의 얼굴을 본 뜬 불상의 얼굴이 제작된 나라마다 다르다면, 그 얼굴이 달라져야할 당위성은 어디에 있는 것인가. 이에 의문을 가지고 본 연구를 진행하게 되었다. 연구대상은 인도의 간다라 지역과 마투라 지역의 사례와 우리나라 불상의 시대별 사례로 한정하였다. 인도와 한국의 불상들의 사례를 지역별, 시대별로 살펴보았다. 간다라 지역과 마투라 지역의 불상의 안면적 특징 비교를 통하여 그리스 신상 양식에 인도 토착민의 얼굴이 녹아 가는 과정을 확인해 볼 수 있었다. 또한 우리나라 불상의 경우 시대별로 불상의 안면을 북방계와 남방계라는 기준으로 분류하여 그 특징에 주목했다. 인도와 우리나라의 사례를 통해 연구하여 불상의 안면이 이처럼 지역화 되는 것을 확인 하였으며, 이러한 현상의 배경에는 불교 교리의 영향이 절대적으로 작용하였다. 불상의 얼굴이 토착민의 얼굴을 닮은 것은 신을 섬기는 것이 아니라 개인이 명상과 참선을 통해 스스로 열반에 들어 부처가 될 수 있다는 불경의 가르침으로부터 비롯된 것이라 사료된다. 불상의 얼굴은 불경의 가르침을 집약하여 단순하면서도 심오한 붓다의 메시지를 전하고 있다. The Buddha Statue is a symbol of the Buddha. When we saw the statue with the human figure, the first thing you will see the face. The buddhism is the forth most major dominant religion in the world. As Buddhist`s visual media, Buddhist sculptures also spread around the world. Is the face of all Buddhist sculpture all around the world the same? The answer is no. then why? The Buddha Statues have various characteristics by period and region. If the face of Buddhist sculpture, which is the face of the Buddha, differs from country to country, where is the reason to change its face? The purpose of this study was to compare the Buddhist sculpture between Korea and India. The first subject of this study was the comparison of the Buddha Statue of india by region especially Gandhara and Mathura. The second was the comparison of the Buddha Statue of Korea by period. We looked at the process of Buddha image resembling the faces of indigenous peoples and searched for reasons from Buddhist teachings. And in case of korea, we classified the sculpture according to criteria which is Southern or Northern, In conclusion, it is believed that the Buddha`s face resembles the face of indigenous peoples, not from serving God, but from the teachings of Buddhism that individuals can become Buddha by themselves in nirvana through meditation and spiritually cultivation.
