젠더 프리 시대와 밀레니얼 핑크 : 젠더 프리 시대 속 변화된 핑크의 활용을 통해 본 상징적 의미 고찰

성의 구분에 따른 핑크 활용의 논란으로부터 출발한 본 연구는 현재적 시점에서 변하고 있는 분홍색의 활용 사례를 정리함으로써 핑크 활용의 변화와 오늘날 밀레니얼 핑크로 총칭되는 변화된 분홍색의 상징적 의미가 무엇인지 규명하는 데에 목적을 두었다. 우선 젠더 프리 시대와 밀레니얼 핑크라는 이슈에 대한 기본 개념과 방향을 수립하였고, 이를 근거로 논의 현황 등을 살펴보며 연구사례 분석의 틀을 마련하였다. 연구대상으로 분홍색의 활용에 대한 평가와 논란이 포함된 기사를 수집하여 구체적인 항목 분류와 함께 이를 둘러싼 논쟁 또한 조사 분석하며 문제점을 인식했다. 연구 범위는 사회, 예술 및 디자인, 미디어 분야로 분류하여 핑크색 활용을 살펴보았다. 분홍색의 활용은 성 평등과 다양성에 대한 이슈의 부상과 함께 동시에 이를 표현하는 수단적 색상으로 자리 잡고 있었는데, 연구 결과 역사의 흐름 속에서 핑크색은 유독 다른 색채와 달리 젠더 관점에서 사회화 양상이 두드러졌으며, 그 상징적 기능은 단순히 지시적 색채를 넘어 사회와 소통하는 면모를 보이고 있었다. 젠더 프리 시대에 영향을 받은 핑크는 밀레니얼 핑크라고 불린다. 밀레니얼 핑크의 상징적 의미가 갖는 대표적 경향은 사회적 클리셰 탈피, 여성적 힘의 대두 그리고 색상 본연의 상징적 기호의 확장 등으로 보인다. 색채는 인간의 의식과 심리 그리고 무의식에 밀접한 관련이 있다. 인간의 기호로서 색채는 이미지화되며 다양한 연상 작용을 일으킨다. 색이 주는 효과는 사회 문화적 방향과 힘을 제시한다. 이러한 맥락과 함께 밀레니얼 제트 세대의 중요한 가치인 ‘젠더 이슈’는 성의 이원론을 가장 뚜렷하게 보여주는 핑크색을 통해 드러나기 시작했다. 젠더 프리 시대를 맞이한 현재, 색채에 부여된 성 고정관념은 지속해서 시대를 반영하는 이슈를 생산하며 젠더 이슈에 대한 담론의 대상이 될 것으로 보인다. The increase in sensitivity to gender issues, a recent social phenomenon, has become one of the heated debates in modern society. As Millennials, in particular, have emerged as the generation who now shapes the society’s economy, the concept of gender equality, one of the values that they emphasize, has become closely tied to the problem of gender role that has been occurring in various fields. Such problems have been clearly taking place through the color pink, which was an evident marker of gender in the past. In such a manner, the association with pink, which is highly related to gender issues, has long been a source of controversy. This study, therefore, first intends to examine the use of pink and its historical formation process that produced symbolic meaning and aims to analyze the constant shift in social perception of pink with the stream of time. In order to examine how the pink color has been used over time, this paper investigated its social, fashion, art, and media categories. Based on the above observation, this study explored the symbolic meaning of pink in the current society in which the gender-neutral values are becoming prominent through analyzing the association of pink in the contemporary society that opposes the traditional characteristics of pink and demands less stereotypical gender values. Such examination especially demonstrated the color-coded gender socialization of pink. In addition, the symbolic function of pink went beyond merely showing its referential function and penetrated deep into social beliefs. The diversified symbols of pink, based on this research, are not simply an attempt to break free or transform the female oppressive tone embedded in pink; the main purpose of these symbols is not to generate a one-sided choice of words that favors a specific gender as well. Rather, it can be concluded that it indicates efforts to focus on the types of moods that pink naturally tends to evoke or extend its symbolic function that adheres to restrictive gender norms.
