As a religious literature, Dunhuang Buddhistic Bianwen prevailed for the Tang and Five Dynasties, and obtained immense popular support. They were produced by Chinese, and were intended to provide for the Chinese people. Therefore, the works inevitably represent the Chinese folk custom and culture in it. Having the differences of the contents between the works and the Buddhist scriptures in mind, this paper try to ascertain the components of the Chinese custom and the culture infiltrated into the works. This research also means to seek internal causes which made it prevalent at the time. |

This research also means to seek internal causes which made it prevalent at the time. 돈황변문은 본래 인도에서 인도인에 의해 탄생한 불교 경전의 가르침을 일반 대중에게 알리는 과정에서 생겨난 것이지만, 그것은 어디까지나 중국에서 중국인에 의해 창작되어 중국인 사이에서 유전되고 향유되었던 것이다. 전파 지역과 전파 대상이 달라지면 그 전파 방법을 물론이고 심지어 전파 내용도 필요에 따라서 달라져야 한다. 중국에 들어온 불교는 속강이라는 새로운 전파 방법을 운용하되 소의경전의 내용에 얽매이지 않고 그 내용을 다소 변형시키거나 없던 내용을 새롭게 첨가하기도 했다. 이것은 모든 종교문학이 으레 그러하듯 속강 향유자들의 높은 호응과 광범위한 전파를 위해 그들의 공통된 인식과 수요, 의지(意志)와 바람을 반영한 당연한 결과였다. 본 논문은 각각의 변문 텍스트와 이들 텍스트가 의거하고 있는 경전과의 내용 비교를 통해, 속강승에 의해 경전의 내용이 변형되거나 새롭게 첨가된 내용들을 가려낸 다음, 이들을 크게 민속신앙과 전통풍습, 전통사상이라는 세 카테고리로 대별하여 그렇게 변형되고 첨가될 수밖에 없었던 배경과 원인을 다각도로 분석 설명하고 있다. 이것은 곧 속강 성행의 내적 요인이자 중국불교의 흥성 배경이기도 하다.
