Abstract | German studies operates from an assumed and hegemonic position of whiteness that is exclusionary in nature. In order for me to be my whole self (in the hooks self-recovery sense),¹ a self that is often minoritized and marginalized in and beyond German studies, I have had to push the boundaries of what constitutes the field and its meanings. Within German studies, certain ideas and methodologies that centre on whiteness continued to be taught regardless of graduate students’ interests or desires. In order to oppose this tendency, I have put into practice the teaching of Black feminist scholarship and critical race |
