Abstract | Road dust samples were collected at 67 places located between 6.5 and 240 km away from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in the 10 prefectures of eastern Japan. The dust samples collected from August 2013 to December 2014 demonstrated 21.6 and 50300 Bq/kg for the lowest and highest 137Cs concentration respectively, and 18200 and 1290 Bq/kg for its average and median values. The range of the concentrations was significantly higher than those of surface soils in crop field, grassland and fruit farm in the 50 km area of the nuclear power plant. The spatial distribution of 137Cs concentration in road dust was consistent with the diffusion path of the radioactive plume. These facts reveal that road dust is an effective media for monitoring 137Cs contamination. Road dust may play one of dominant factors of 137 Cs distribution and important role in investigating its environmental behavior because it is discharged via drainage to river system and may eventually reach to ocean. |
