Summary:1) Cefoxitin (CFX) was administered to 20 in-patients with complicated urinary tract infection diagnosed by the Departments of Urology of Kyushu University and of Kyushu Pention Hospital. 2) Daily dose of 4.0g was administered by intravenous bolus or drip infusion for 5 days. 3) Clinical outcome was excellent in 2, good in 9 and poor in 9 cases which gave an overall efficacy rate of 55%, 74% when Pseudomonas infections were excluded. 4) Bacteriologically, 23 strains were isolated, and the following results were obtained; eradicated in 6, persisted in 11 and colonized in 6. It was noted that a majority of organisms isolated were from the genera of Proteus, Pseudomonas and Serratia. 5) No side effects were observed except a case of transient urticaria and a case of transient elevation of GOT. and GPT.
