Summary:To investigate whether the local structure of ionic liquids is similar to the domain structure of liquid crystals, we have designed and synthesized two sets of racemic and S,S-enriched ionic liquid crystalline compounds which can show the achiral and chiral smectic A (SmA) phases, respectively, and characterized their magnetic properties by SQUID magnetometry and EPR spectroscopy. Here we report the experimental results on the comparison of temperature dependences of the molar magnetic susceptibility (χM), molecular orientation (g-value) and line width (ΔHpp) of the crystalline, LC, and isotropic phases.
