Abstract | The heated debates over images that attracted so much energy and intelligence in the eighth century cooled noticeably in the years after II Nicaea and Frankfurt. In the West popes and Franks continued to work together productively and amicably despite their disagreements over images and the filioque. In the East, conditions were less serene. In 797 Irene decided to have her frivolous son Constantine VI blinded—he died from his wounds—and to assume rule herself.
