| Abstract | We reviewed the inpatients under 15 years of age at the oral and maxillofacial surgery department of Tokyo Women's Medical College hospital during the 6 years from 1986 to 1991. The total number of inpatients was 1290 and 121 were under 15 years old. Seventy three were boys and 48 were girls and the male to female ratio was 1.5: 1. The mean annual number of pediatric inpatients was 20.2. Twelve patients were aged 1 and 11 were aged 2, accounting for a high proportion, and 47.9% of the patients were under 7 years of age. The diagnosis were as follows; trauma in 46 cases (38.1%), inflammation in 15 (12.4%), and dental problems in 13 (10.7%), followed by congenital anomalies, salivary gland disease, and tumors and cysts. The shortest admission period was 1 day, while the longest was 39 days, and 66.9% of admissions lasted less than 1 week. The most common treatment was suturing followed by dental procedures and 54 patients (44.6%) needed general anesthesia. Complications were present in 17 patients including 10 with heart disease such as tetralogy of Fallot. |
