Summary: | This is my mathematical translation of a poem belonging to the paralipomena (supplemental or appended texts) of Novalis’s “Die Lehrlinge zu Saïs” (The apprentices of Saïs). The poem reads as follows:
It worked for one – he lifted the veil of the Goddess of Saïs – But what did he see? He saw – wonder of wonders – himself.¹
The rendering is viable because this algebraic identity is analogous to the idea in the poem that an individual recognizes themselves in a higher power.
