Abstract This paper deals with the theoretical and experimental analysis of the dynamic characteristics of a multi-coupled belt system driven by an induction motor. The equations of motion of the belt system are easily derived by using the computer algorithm presented in the first report. In order to investigate the transient response exactly, the output torque of the motor is considered in two cases. In case 1, the torque is approximated by a speed characteristics curve which shows steady-state torque against rotational speed of a motor. In case 2, the torque is precisely calculated by using the equations of the relationship between voltages and currents of an equivalent two-phase induction motor. The vibratory response of the belt system and the oscillation of the current in the motor interact each other, and the response of the motor torque differs from the steady-state torque. In order to investigate the transient response, it is necessary to consider the transmission of the energy between mechanical systems and electrical systems.
