Abstract Tourism represents an important economic factor for Austria. At the same time, the tourism industry - in particular winter tourism - is an energy intensive industry. Especially high load peaks are a challenge for regenerative energy supply and the energy grid. One possibility to support the overall energy system in winter tourism regions is to identify and use flexible loads in ski resorts. Thereby, to relieve the system from overload/violations, energy demand can be shifted to times when the CO2-intensity is low in the energy grid and/or in times with low energy demands. Within the scope of this work flexibilities in nine ski resorts in Austria were identified and their operation was optimized in simulations and field tests. This paper aims to assess the impact of optimizing available flexibilities in ski resorts on 1) the CO2 footprint and 2) the energy costs of the consumed energy, and 3) the monthly power peaks.
