Abstract In the past couple years, there is growing interest in passive UHF RFID technology for automatic vehicle identification (AVI) in electronic toll collection (ETC). This paper introduces two novel passive UHF tag designs for vehicle identification, namely the Detachable Windshield Tag and the Thin-wire Vehicle Headlamp Tag. For the first design, which is different from usual windshield tag design, it allows user to switch tag ID by replacing a detachable card with a desired unique tag ID, and in the same time maintaining a low profile structure. For the second design, the antenna part is constructed by a very thin wire of only 0.2 mm wide, which benefits in minimizing blocking of light from the vehicle headlamp. PCT patents of design 1 and design 2 have been filed in Sept 2015 and Sept 2016 respectively.
