Summary:In SPP (Small Power Producers) plants, especially in Thailand, maximum amount of generating power to the Utility Power Grid is limited and balance electric power as well as heat energy is supplied to industrial users (IUs). Sudden isolation of the grid connection may take place by various reasons, meaning that generating power to the Utility Power Grid from the plant has to be reduced instantly and thereafter the plant continues to supply electric power and heat to IUs (called Island Mode Operation (IMO)). Special system consideration has to be made to keep stable operation of electrical as well as heat energy supply to the IUs in case of such operation. This paper explains how the system design considerations and operational scenarios are made to achieve the stable operation and secure transition from normal to island operation mode.
