Abstract Dynamic wireless power transfer requires knowledge of the system behavior when coupled coefficient of the coils are varied with a coil movement. However, most of the widely used analytical models are based on a steady-state frequency domain with the lack of inconstant speed information incorporating in the models. This paper presents a time-domain mathematical model for a dynamic charging system. The proposed model adopts the fundamental principle analysis of an electromechanical system that allows the speed of a moving receiver coil to be included for more accurate calculation of transient and steady state responses of the system. The proposed model is validated with simulation for both stationary and dynamic operation of the wireless power system and brief experiment results are given in addtion. The presented mathematical model will benefit a design of control loop for dynamic charging systems and the approach used in this work can also be extended to multi-coupled coil systems.
