Abstract In this paper, we propose a new electromagnetic spherical actuator capable of a three-degree-of-freedom rotation. The basic structure and the operating principle of the actuator are described, and a position feedback system for the actuator using optical image sensors is proposed. Through the comparison with the measurement of a prototype, the validity of this method is verified.
