Abstract Synopsis Near sulfur K edge photoionization of the SF6, molecule has been studied for X-ray photons. Total and partial photoion yields for the fragmentation products have been recorded as a function of the incident photon energy. The atomic fluorine ion, F+, dominates the mass spectra in the energy range studied in this paper. The intensity of absorption for the dipole-forbidden but vibronically allowed transition S K (1a1g→6a1g) was calculated for the first time. This transition is shown to play a part in the fragmentation profile.
