Abstract In order to damp the load oscillation, a DE optimal PID controller is designed for overhead crane control process. Inspired by bee colony foraging mechanism, a neighborhood search operation is adopted for differential evolution (DE) algorithm to improve the search efficiency. This improved DE algorithm is employed to adjust PID controller parameters off-line. Through simulation and comparison under different operation conditions, the DE based PID controller exhibits the better performance in overhead crane anti-swing and position control.
