Abstract In electrical power systems, transmission line fault location has been a widely investigated topic. Among the existing fault location methods, traveling wave (TW)-based solutions have shown to be the most accurate alternative. As a result, the development and evaluation of single-ended TW fault location (SETWFL) methods have attracted the interest of utilities, mainly due to its reduced cost and ease of application. In this context, although a commercially available SETWFL solution based on the recognition of fault-induced transient patterns has shown to be promising, further studies on how the sensitivity of TW detectors influence the method's performance are still required. Thus, this paper evaluates the relay transient detection sensitivity when applying a commercially available SETWFL function.
