High bitrate 1.3 μm optical transmission in the field using cascaded semiconductor optical amplifiers

The first results of an RZ, 10 Gbit/s transmission field trial over a 210 km installed standard single mode fibre link are reported. The link utilised lumped amplification, provided by semiconductor optical amplifiers, and newly developed synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH), TM-64 terminal units.
